The soothing effects of Essential oils!
67After mucking around in the dirt (in the garden or cleaning out the chicken coop) I can find nothing more soothing and calming then taking a bath or shower with one of the following liquid bath soaps. When I'm aching all over and my muscles refuse to do one more stretch either one of these following soaps will soothe away the ache and leave me refreshed.
These following recipes call for store-bought Glycerin soap, but if you have the time you can start from scratch too.
You do not need to set up a science lab to make the following liquid soap recipes. Everything you need should be available in your kitchen. Although you might want to use a quaint little cauldron, pottery and crocks the best to use for soap making are glass and stainless steel.
Equipment needed!
- double boiler or a heavy pot or saucepan
- long handles spoon
- container or recycled shampoo bottle

A word about essential oils:
- Essential oils are the pure undiluted and, mostly. steam-distilled oils from flowers, herbs and trees.
- They are volatile which means that they will evaporate quickly.
- Most essential oils have germicidal, antiseptic and preservative characteristics.
- Caution: Do not use undiluted pure essential oils on the skin (with one sole exception to this rule and that is Lavender oil) because these oils can cause severe skin irritations and may even be toxic.
- Also When buying Essential Oils this is what you have to look for:No Additives - No Pesticides - No Carrier oils - 1st Distilled - Undiluted Essential Oils. With other words you want the best, only 100% Pure Essential Oils for Aromatherapy will do.
- Aromatherapy essential oils can be bought in a variety of sizes (1/6 oz, ½ oz, 1 oz, 4 oz,8 oz & wholesale 16 oz and 176 oz bulk containers).

Base liquid bath soap!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup fresh lemon balm leaves & stems 1/3 cup dried
- 1/4 cup dried linden or lime tree flower (available at health-food stores also comes in individual tea bags use 4 of those)
- 1 tablespoon of lemon zest
- 1 cup glycerin soap (finely grated)
- 1 tablespoon wheat germ or sweet almond oil (available at health-food stores make sure you check the best before dates on these oils as they go rancid fairly fast)
- 1 tablespoon borax
- 1 cups strong infusion
- 3 cup distilled water
Methodology:
Infusion: To make an infusion is easy, its just like making tea.
- Pour 1 cup boiling water over the lemon balm, lemon zest and linden flowers (or tea bags) and let brew or steep for 1/2 - 3/4 hour.
- Strain out the herbs from the infusion.
- Combine in double boiler the grated soap, wheat germ oil add the distilled water gradually while stirring. Add borax and keep stirring until the soap is totally melted and smooth, stir in infusion and remove from heat.
- Let cool then bottle.
Remember that essential oils are volatile and will dissipate if bottle is kept open. Try to use small containers or shampoo bottle so that it wont sit around for too long before it's used up so you get all the benefits of the essential oils

Zsuzsy Bee, Love this essentials oil hub, I use the soothing effects of Essential Oils often as it affects us in so many wonderful ways. Thanks and Peace :)
This is fascinating. I recently did an article (another site) about thyme essential oil, and how they've found it cures staph infections. They said it had to be theraputic grade, not sure how that differs.
This is a very well written and informative hub! I look forward to trying some recipes!
ZB - I must tell you a true story. Several years ago my husband and I returned from the ranch, unpacked & in a short while began to have angry whelps or bites around our waists & various other areas where clothing had held tightly against our skin. I began to notice these looked & felt just like the chigger bites I used to get as a kid after playing outside in the grass, - but this made no sense. Nevertheless, I became more and more convinced, though we went to the doctor who had no clue but pooh-poohed my theory and gave us some ineffective ointment to apply.
Thinking back to our last days at the ranch, I remembered I was taking issue with a stand of wild horehound (which I harvest for cold treatment) near the cabin and began to visualize that they may have started looking for other quarters and found the SUV in which I kept some of our supplies nearby and was in and out of it all the time.
So with the growing certainty that they were somehow chigger bites, I went online asking about how to treat the bites and get rid of the pests, with little or no results. I even called a professional exterminator, whose only suggestion, in the unlikely event that they were chiggers, was that we'd have to move everything out of the house, top to bottom (a 2-story house) and have a total extermination done while we took up residence elsewhere. That wasn't a possibility. Meantime online reports I was reading described people moving out of houses, only to find the chiggers moved with them. It was discouraging.
But I kept studying chiggers' life cycles and learned that the adults don't bite animals. The adults are vegetarian. It's the larvae, which are like miniature adults, who bite. Each one has only one chance to find and get animal nourishment. When they find flesh, they inject a tube in from which to inject a powerful enzyme/digestive juice and then suck out the baby-food they created. One successful bite and they drop off and wait for the next phase in which the nourishment is used to produced an adult chigger who will happily eat grass and create more larvae. Normally this only occurs outside for obvious reasons.
Their dormant stage in late fall was beginning at the ranch while we were packing to leave and they must have found warm places to sleep in the hatchback while open. They would wake up from dormancy in the spring, produce larvae and the cycle would begin. But when we unpacked into our warm house, it triggered awakening so they began to emerge here and do their thing.
They prefer small animals for their meal but we were the available animals here, so they started to feast on us. It seemed endless - they were obviously recycling and reproducing. Then out of the blue - I found one online article saying that they are repelled by lavender oil!!!!!!! I had some! Maybe, I thought, I could starve them out!!!!!!! If they couldn't get their bites, they wouldn't be able to develop into adults or start new cycles! So for a period of time, each day after we showered, we ran a small tub of water, added some drops of pure lavender oil, rolled around in it to make sure to coat every part of our skin, air-dried and became living chigger-deflectors! And it worked. It didn't take too long before we weren't getting bitten any more. If we tapered off the lavender for a short time, we might get a bite or two - but we kept going on with the lavender until there were no more instances and there have been no more to this day!

Good information, but it sounds kind of expensive to have all the ingredients you listed to make the bath soaps. I'm way too lazy to do it the long way. I try to buy organic or no preservative products to avoid the hassle, but keep the product good for my skin. Thanks for the information, though. I never really knew much about oils before.
Nice hub with a lot of good advice.
