Sew Those Seams---Easy How to Sew Tutorials!

76

By Zsuzsy Bee

I'm proud to admit that I'm a stitch-a-holic. I was bitten by the highly contagious sewing bug many, many years ago. There is no cure, no remedy and temporary relief can only be found at the nearest fabric store with a new stash of material under each arm. I'm happy when sewing a new set of drapes, quilting, building a three piece suit but never happier than spending hours and hours putting together a wedding gown from scratch that is fabulously lacy, complex, full of embellishments or embroidery. (I love it)

The sad thing is I had to learn to live with this affliction no matter how hard it was or is, so without further ado:

Let's Start At The Beginning! And according to the song the beginning is usually a great place to start. Well, sewing can be called a craft or an art, depending on who is doing the calling. I personally consider taking a piece of cloth and shaping it into something wearable or decorative for the home as an artsy obsession.

However no matter what direction of sewing you want to pursue, making clothes for your children, sewing those roman shades for the new house or quilting that beautiful log cabin throw, some basic techniques or fundamentals will have to be learned. And as in everything, practice makes perfect. That having been said, there are a lot of shortcuts and tricks that can make the practice, practice, and practice way more fun. That's where I hope I come in and get you positioned just right so you too can be bitten by the 'sewing bug'. Right in the 'Bee-hind' right where it counts...

I will put together a series of hubs here that should give you the Step-by-Step Sewing Essentials that will cover the basic terminology and the basic know-how necessary to get started in the art or craft of sewing.

These are some of the hubs that are in the works:

  • Basic facts about your sewing machine and it's upkeep,
  • Basic sewing tools with definitions and how to use them.
  • How to measure accurately, which is one of the most important task when sewing clothes or home decor alike.
  • I'll try to explain sewing notions such as thread, buttons, snaps, hook and eyes, zippers. Which is the right kind to use for what purpose.
  • I will post photos of how to do seams: plain seam, French seam, etc. and what application to use them in.
  • We'll do hand stitching: running stitch, back stitch, hemming stitch, etc., machine stitching: straight stitch, zigzag stitch, etc.
  • We'll find out about Fabric: choices... which type to use for what application.
  • Pattern reading, adjusting, making.
  • And a whole lot more.

I forgot to add one major thing....we'll have a lot of fun too. If you have questions or if you're in a pickle with regards to some sewing dilemmas, I'll try to help you through them too if I can.

Unfortunately before we can jump into our new hobby we need to get a few things out of the way. Some of the theory can be boring so I’ll give it to you in small little chunks that are easily digested in each of the hubs (you won't even know that you're getting some of the theory). I'll even put together a few follow along project that you can make with me or not... naturally it's up to you.

What tools and equipment you'll need are grouped together into three different lists:

1) Have to have!

2) Sure would be nice to have...

3) Oh yeah baby...now we're talking tools!

But please remember that although I will point you into the direction of certain tools it doesn’t mean you have to rush out and buy the same. However that being said every job, no matter if it's sewing or fixing cars, needs a proper tool or at least will make the job easier to get done.

For example you can use an ordinary wrench to remove a spark-plug but (there is always that little three letter word 'but' ) chances of that spark-plug coming out without a problem, are much better with the appropriate ’spark-plug wrench’. It’s the same with sewing. Most tasks can be accomplished but are much easier with the right tool and equipment.

I'm not quite sure yet how a continuous series of sewing tutorials will work here on hubpages but we'll never know until we try... Will we?

Tracy, when I was a kid my Dad told me that when (not if) I went to college or university, whatever I wanted to be he had one non-negotiable demand... I had to learn how to sew... which I did and sewing and handy work became my life.

Thanks for stopping by and for commenting

Sewing essentials is a great skill that I think everyone should try to work on. Even if it is just learning the proper way of sewing a button or filling a seam, you will come to realize that doing it yourself will save you time and money. Using scrap fabric is a great way to practice out new techniques and perfecting ones that you have been working on. Fantastic hub!

Awesome hub. I only know how to do the basics....hemming, buttons, patches...

All of which looks like the work of a 7 year old, but whatever works right? I even own a sewing machine. Didn't say I knew how to use it, but it's there. I'm looking forward to turning my dabble into actual skill or something that might pass as skill. Thanks for the great info.

SteveoMc, unfortunately fixing holes in Tshirting is not very easy but I'll see what I can do to create a hub just for you doing just that.

Great hub and thanks for adding mine to your links. Alas, I don't have the time to put into the sewing hubs that I did have in the beginning. I am glad that you are picking up on this. I did a beginners sewing class in a JoAnnes once and had a lady there that was reluctant to learn how. She was so negative I wondered why she was even there in the first place. At every step in the sewing process she would say to me something like we shall see. When the class was finished she had the best sewn pair of shorts in the class. Of course I gave her a certificate for her finished project. That was years ago and I never saw her again. Some people just need to have lots of positive affirmations along the way. I bet she sews all kinds of things.

bayoulady, glad you popped in. I'm not so sure I want a cure for all my handywork. My pets, my garden and my handywork are the only things that are keeping me sane. (well, some might not agree with me on the sane bit... but let's just pretend shall we)

You know what I need is sewing essentials for men. I don't like to sew, but sometimes I need to and would love to have some instruction for the neanderthal in me. I have the most rudimentary of tools and need help with little things like a hole in my favorite t-shirt.

What a great hub!! I used to sew, years ago, and enjoyed it very much. I found it creatively fulfilling to make a dress or a pair of pants for myself.

I should get back into that. Thanks for this hub, I will find it useful!

It is something you never forget I think. After many decades of not sewing, when we moved here to Prinetucky, we needed balloon curtains - something simple so as not to obstruct the view of the gorgeous wetlands. I purchased a sturdy but affordable sewing machine and off I went!

I am happy to say that I designed all the curtains myself as the windows were all different sizes, and then became so addicted that we found ourselves with pillows of every assortment, dog beds, dog blankets we will have for at least 5 more dogs, aprons and placemats and napkins that could serve a party of 100!

Yes, it seems I am passionate about everything I touch but it surely was fun to know I could still sew! Great hub and only wish I could give up sleep - and that pesky thing called work. Too many things to do and not enough hours to do them all!

I really enjoyed your hub. I lost my mother at such a young age that I never was taught many things a mother teaches a daughter. I will look to you to teach me how to sew. I usually pay people to help out with holes in shirts etc... thanks so much Zsuzsy Bee. Up and Useful

Lots of good information here in your article. Love the shopping bag! :) Will make one from a old worn torn long denim dress that is about to be tossed.

Lily Rose, it does take patience to learn to sew that's for sure. I have had many students who said the same but have become accomplished sewers (quilters).

As for the quilt, I make 'first garment quilts' all the time. If you're serious about it email me and we'll talk.

hope you and the gang are well

I'm envious - I wish I could sew! I've done minor things before but I really don't know much about sewing and unfortunately don't have the time or patience to learn. I've actually been looking for someone to sew a quilt for me from my daughters' first year clothes - interested??

I was bitten by the same sewing bug. I got pretty good at it too. Made everything from lined suits to lined Moire draperies. When I opened the bed and breakfast, I made all the curtains, drapes, dust ruffles, and pillows. I use to love to sew!....then I got arthritis in my hands. The rest is history. Loved the hub. Thanks.
