How I found my way to HUBPAGES
As recent as five years ago I thought of the computer in my tailor shop as a fancy-fan-fangled typewriter with a screen. It created invoices, monthly statements, tax reports and it played a mean game of Tertris and Spider-solitaire.
Then a major catastrophe changed my life, a fire destroyed the building that housed my tailor shop. Even my car was lost, which had been parked at the back door of the building. For the first time in 30 some years I found myself with time on my hands and no sewing machines, no sewing gidgets and gadgets and worst of all no fabric collection. With other words, this pack-rat was totally devastated and at a loss.
Now I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with 'eBay'. I was not; all I had heard from friends was that it was a great place to find just about anything you were looking for. Well, trying to take my mind off my misery, not knowing which way to turn my life I was game, still willing to try most everything once. I sat myself down in front of the home typewriter unit with screen... I mean computer... and asked myself... Do I dare? Can it really be a good place to buy? Oh well! I guess I can check it out. I thought, I don't have to buy anything, just looking won't hurt, just to see what's available out there... right?
Well, it was a big mistake to think that "window" better said "screen shopping" would satisfy me. Living in a small town of less then 5000 people any major shopping had to be done in the city 35 km away. And with no car sitting in the driveway at my disposal I just had to try this new to me way of shopping. (Life is funny that way; what ever is really needed it ‘giveth'---in my case shopping opportunities. No woman should have to do without shopping for long; it can be hazardous to our health---that is my story and no matter what I'm sticking to it.)
Now let me tell you it was an eye-opener. Creating an account took a total of 2 minutes. (With my daughters help) Then type in sewing notions, sewing equipment, sewing machines, industrial sewing machines, sewing fabrics, sewing material, sewing thread, sewing zippers, sewing books, sewing........ Wow! Man-OH-Man I'd found my new heaven. Just about anything is available, some of it actually dirt-cheap.
For days and days I was glued to my new found best friends the typewriter with screen and the Internet. (Some days my daughter left for school while I was in front of the screen and when she returned home I was still in the same position... in front of the screen. At the beginning it was just fun to watch how the bidding etc. went.
Then I dared.... My first bid and win was a little hair-raising but more fun then I can explain. Be fore-warned though 'E-BAY-ING' is addictive... did you see how I said that? I can not say "can be addictive" I will say it "IS" addictive as I still hunt for deals and am totally hooked. I have had a lot of great luck, only a couple of deals have actually backfired. One at the start because I didn't double check on the cost of shipping and handling... for example the 6 brand new pillow forms that I won the bid for, for only .99 cents actually cost me almost Can$48.00. And one where the vendor took my money but never shipped the goods. However Paypal fixed it eventually and replaced my money. These are the only mishaps that occurred in the past three-four years out of 708 transactions up till now. I don't think that those are really bad odds. Do you?
So here is a list of the main concern that I double check on BEFORE bidding.
~Does the price seem like a good deal?
~Where is the item located?
~Does the vendor have a good reputation and score?
~Does the vendor ship to Canada?
~Does the vendor accept paypal?
~Does the vendor have a shipping calculator attached to his offerings?
~Is the itemsupposedly in good working order?
~Does the vendor guarantee the item to be in working order?
~How often does the vendor ship?
~Does the vendor spend time displaying and explaining his goods? (chances are that if the vendor showcases his inventory with pride the item will be of good quality)
I honestly think that eBay is a great place to find everything you need or would like as long as you are somewhat familiar with the prices for the items in your area. (Naturally you have to remember to add the shipping and handling costs and build them into the deals). Only deal with vendors that accept Paypal or money orders, as those are a secured way...
Isn't the internet just the most amazing thing ever? It has shrunk the world into a small little "second" in time. It let's me travel and chat with just about anyone anywhere. And the opportunities for a nosey bee like me are just phenominal... Knowledge, knowledge and more on the screen of my fancy-dancey-typewriter
Wow... Hmm... I wonder what's up with this site called Hubpages I really should check into it as I'm really ready for a new addiction
Oops, did I call Hubpages a new addiction? Well it has been one for me now for a full 12 month. For me it has been more then that, it has become a life line... that connects me to the outside world in ways that I could only dream about.
I would like to say a mega thank you to the great Team at Hubpages, for making it possible for this tech-ignoramous (me) to be able to be a part of it. And a great thanks to all the nice friends that I made here... from all over the US, Australia, England, France, Israel, India,.....

Thanks for joining us here. I hope it's an addictive behavior you do not quit anytime soon.
Yep, music or audio books can be burned to CDs. Movies (and games) can be burned to blank DVDs. Music, no problems at all, but for me, trying to burn an audio book to CD resulted in numerous problems. I have an MP3-formatted CD player, made especially for MP3-formatted audio books, but it did not like the ones I burned (I bought it for an online audio book club). So I picked up a small (1 Gig) MP3 player which I can easily transfer an audio book to from my computer and holds about one good-sized book. The one I have on there now is a very thick book.
PS: Still doing OK! Thanks for asking.
Zsuzsy, no catch. My cousins, the ex-military tech wizards, have been using this resource for years: music, games, movies, audio books, etc. When downloading music or audio books, be sure the format is MP3 - it'll specify the format on the list. If not, don't download it. That's important. Although most formats will work on your computer, if you want to transfer an audio book to an MP3 player, like I do, you'll need that format. Enjoy: http://torrent-finder.com/
excellente hub, I really enjoyed reading about your journey. I agree hubpages and ebay can become very addictive as Im currently finding out!
That totally sucks about your tailoring shop. That had to be very brutal at the time. But sounds like you rebounded nicely. I'm too lazy to mess with Ebay, and way to impatient to wait for stuff to ship. I suppose eventually I will; have lots of friends who run little side business with it. But for now, I'm way too impatient to track bids and wait. Im a seek-and-destroy shopper. Straight to the store I need, straight to the aisle and time, straight home. lol. Typical male I guess.
Entertaining read, and, I hope your insurance covered for a cool new car.
Hi Zsuzsy,
I'm fine, thanks. The only thing I even consider on Ebay now is also books. As you know, for $3 or $4, including the S/H, you can have a book that would cost you well over $20 in a bookstore.
Take care too!
Hi Zsuzsy! You've just written my story :)
Everything you described I experienced. The being glued to the typewriter w/screen, from sunrise to sunset and beyond. Talk about an Ebay addiction! My house has become a dumping ground for my 'treasures'. I was on a first name basis with the UPS guy. I had daily deliveries, sometimes two and three boxes at a time. I've accumulated over 1500 transactions in the last seven years.
Then came August 2008. I lost my 2nd job, which was my discretionary income. Although it has been a major readjustment, it has also been a blessing in disguise. I no longer have daily or even weekly deliveries. I knew, the same day I lost the job that my way of living needs to change. I knew my regular salary could not support my Ebay addiction. I am no longer a fixture at Ebay. I had a list of favorite sellers, and out of those I bought many multiple things from each of them.
Now, working a normal 40 hour week, I am home nights and weekends. I now have time to devote to my granddaughter, time to spend with family and friends, time to read, which is another of my passions.
And now, HP. Hmmm, yes, I am now addicted to this site. But this is something productive for me, meaning, it costs me nothing to be here, I get to meet wonderful people, and get to write and publish! What fun!
I could go on and on, but I'll stop here. Thanks for sharing your story!
Trish
Zsuzsy, what a great Hub! I love how you described your adventure into eBay, and how your daughter found you just where you were when she left you.
I'm glad your eBay experiences have been good. I've never had a bad one, but I'm a seller more than a buyer. However, I did buy a half-dozen 100 percent cotton slouch socks one year (they are almost impossible to find), and the cost was way cheap but the shipping charge was horrendous. Mostly, I was OK with that, because I couldn't find the socks anywhere else. Unfortunately, the socks were of very poor quality, and lost all of the elastic at the tops after the first washing, so I emailed the seller. He refunded all of my money including the shipping, didn't want the product back, and now my doggie has an abundance of sock toys which I make for her with found squeakies and lots of cotton batting. Her Bo-Bos are all natural!
This Internet life is suiting a lot of us for a lot of different reasons. I, too, have become an Internet junkie, and it's been a route somewhat like yours. Maybe I'll write my own Hub about that some day.
Thumbs up!
Thanks, Zsuzsy. I'm doing OK. I recently downloaded the audio books 1 thru 12 of the "Shannara" series by Terry Brooks. He's been writing this series (and I've been reading it) for about 30 years. Free!
Fun hub. I've never bought anything on eBay - I like Amazon.com myself, but I sold a couple of swords through them once. Made a pretty good profit, too!
Oh I hear ya! I definately have become an internet junkie!!LOL
It's so easy and effortless;who wouldn't?
I've also noticed the pounds are creeping up.sigh
Nice hub! I was directed to Hubpages by a friend who was trying to wean me off my addiction for social networking...I have to sheepishly admit I seem to have exchanged one addiction for another!
This was such a fun hub to read, since this happened (or something similar) to so many of us. Have a ball on eBay and Hubpages!
We are so glad to have you and your quick wit with us.
Zsuzsy, Great hub here! and an insight into your Internet journey to Hubpages and your story will help and save others lots of time to use PC wisly especially if they are an junkie like us!
Its sad that the word "addiction" has been associated to so may bad things such as drugs and alcohol but a hubpage addiction as well as others im addicted to should be recommended by a doctor and instead of an apple a day its a hub a day!
Hey lady, that knitting thing is a must buy for me, lol. Great hub.
thanks for sharing your experience. It was an interesting read!
