Hands On .....On Hands! with arthritis massage oil recipe.

Hands on.....on Hands!
I'm sitting here plastering some of my special arthritis massage oil onto my sore hands. I see them but really look at them for the first time in ages. That's such a stupid statement you say...but tell me honestly when was the last time you actually looked and saw your hands as the magnificent tools they really are; not for the dry chapped skin or moan and groan about needing a manicure.
As I constantly find myself with "mini-obsessions" where I just need to know all there is to know about a subject. I checked 'Hands' on Wikipedia, in the Britannica Encyclopedia and Dictionary and came up with the following...
Hand is described in my trusty old Oxford English Reference Dictionary as such:(in Latin: manus) the end of a human arm beyond the wrist, including the fingers and thumb.
In other primates, the end part of a forelimb, can also be used as a foot...etc.
For all needs and purposes I collected these descriptions
Hands are:
- Complex, prehensile (meaning able to grasp or grab) and multi-fingered.
- Used for physically manoeuvering the environment.
- Fingertips hold the densest area of nerve endings in the human body.
- The sense of touch and tactile is mainly associated with hands.
The anatomy of the human hand:
- The human hand consists of a broad palm (metacarpus) with 5 digits, attached to the forearm by a joint called the wrist (carpus).
- The back of the hand is formally called the dorsum of the hand.
- The human hand has 27 bones: the carpus or wrist accounts for 8.
- The metacarpus or palm contains 5.
- The remaining 14 are digital bones, your fingers and thumb.
- The eight bones of the wrist are arranged in two rows of four. These bones fit into a shallow socket formed by the bones of the forearm.
Typical of me, I go off on tangents here and there!
-Do you remember the first time your hands touched the rosy ever so sweet softness of your newborn babies skin?
-Did you ever marvel that such softness actually could exist?
-Do you suppose your hands were able to communicate your true inner love to your babes?
-At what time do babies hands consciously acknowledge that touching sensation?
-Do you recall the first time those so inquisitive, softest of soft little hands transmitted their unconditional love to you when they touched your hands?
There are 'Reading Hands', they probably should be called 'Seeing Hands' instead because they can interpret little bumps (Braille invented 1821) and thus becoming stand-ins for eyes. Amazing just how sensitive the fingertips can become to be able to distinguish where a tiny raised dot sits in a grouping of six.
Nurturing Hands or Healing Hands come from Moms, Physio therapists, Nurses, Surgeons and so many more.
To the Artists Hands, the Sculptors, the Painters, the Musicians and all the rest......it's so vital for them to have eye and hand co-ordination
Everyday life uses hands to guide in learning. Hands as tools...
There is not a tool made that can compete with the complexity of a hand. People in the artificial limb production can avow to this.
All hand on deck...for the proverbial hands.
Even clean gardeners hands and finger nails are black with earth...On the other hand...They are hand and glove...But my hands are tied...unfortunately it can be hard to... Work with the hand you're dealt...when you have...To live from hand to mouth...but it pays to remember that...Many hands lighten the load...as...An empty hand is no lure for a hawk...but then again...One bird in the hand is better then two in the bush...especially if its a rose bush as...The rose bush has thorns only for the hand that would steal it's blossoms...although in some cases...The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing...so don't...Show a tiger your bleeding little finger as he may want your whole hand...in my opinion it's not cool to...Bite the hand that feeds you...yet it's comforting to know that...The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world...but also never forget to...Hold on to a true friend with both your hands...
As I'm a take action sort of person I'm always reluctant to leave my well being or that of my family in any one else's hands with the exception of asking for
GODS HANDS IN GUIDANCE.
And so-on and on goes the saga of the
hand...hand-held...hand-picked...
hands-down...hand-to-hand..
handball...handbell...handbill...
handcart...handbrake...
handcuff...handgun...and much
more all with another handful in the
handbook...

My arthritis massage oil recipe... it can work wonders!
Only use small amount when you're really achy because this can be a little harsh on the skin. You need to experiment with the strength that your skin can tolerate. Also careful not to rub near your eyes and nose.
To make massage oil you'll need:
Base oil ingredients:
- 1 whole Capsicum frutescens (chili pepper) fresh is best but can be substituted with dried. Not so perfect but will also do 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne because its gritty.
- 1/2" chunk of fresh ginger root crushed. If not available use 3/4 teaspoon of powdered ginger.
- 2 cups grapeseed oil (almond oil is best but will not last as it gets rancid faster)
Base oil methodology:
Combine and heat these three ingredients over a double-boiler for 1.5 hours. Cover with lid and let stand an additional 2 hours .Strain infused oil and pour into a dark glass bottle with a tight fitting lid or stopper. Will last for 2-3 months in dark cool place.
for individual uses you will need
Massage oil ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon infused base oil
- 2 drops eucalyptus essential oil
- 2 drops cinnamon essential oil
- 3 drops rosemary essential oil
- 1/2 teaspoon of Aloe Vera 'sap' freshly squeezed from plant leaf (optional)
Massage oil methodology:
Combine all in a small bowl or shot glass. I massage my hands for 5 minutes. Can also be used when heat treatment is recommended rub gently into affected area or joints. If using before going to bed cover hands with gloves to assure you don't rub your eyes in your sleep.
TIP: remember essential oils are volatile (the scents evaporate and are rendered useless) therefore should be mixed on an as needed basis.

Wow fantastic hub. I love to read it.
Of course they will help. Your hubs are so nice and well done, full of information and a good tips contained!
woow another great hub. Hands are so important for us, thank you for your hub about hands. I have to try some of your recipes written in your hub. Thank you very much for sharing.
THanks Zsuzsy. I'll get your hub linked into my series as well in the next day or so. We think alike! My version: If the same thing worked for everyone, we'd only need one of everything.
Great article ZsuZsy. I think it would be a good fit with my Arthritis Relief for Hand Pain and Stiffness with Contrast Baths hub, and Arthritis Relief with Resting Hand Splints. I have 4 Arthritis hubs so far. I will also be writing an Arthritis hub overview for hands which will include Joint Protection strategies for the hands.
Thank you for writing such a lovely reflection on hands. So much came to mind about my grandmother as I read your Hub and the comments.
My grandmother was a fabulous cook. In those days, the fat of choice was lard, and lard was on her hands each and every day. Her hands, though aged with spots and wrinkles, were smooth as silk.
Her mother lost her sight later in life, but I remember my grandmother telling me that her mother knitted beautiful and complex pieces until the day she died, letting her hands be her guide, instead of her eyes.
Beautiful Hub, Zsuzsy.
Wow....I have learned so much about a body part without having to go to confession after. Thanks!
Yes, isn't it wonderful to just pause for awhile and catch something that grabs your attention? Love the HANDS hub Zsuzsy. I sometimes look at my hands and am just grateful that it helps people heal. :-)

I have these moments too where I want to know so much about a topic and it goes from there! This turned into a very entertaining hub in the end and now we know more about the origin of the word hands.
I really like this hub, ZsuzsyBee. There are some really great pictures here, too. I hope you'll find something comforting to ease the pain of your own hands.
Zsuzsy, such a nice hub about something we take so much for granted...I love hands too. The touch of a loved one is so comforting, the attention getting swat to save a child from danger, the push - pull of friends, stroking your loved pets, brushing our hair, teeth, cleaning ourselves and the dishes....its all about the hands. Thank you!! I'm going to go wash mine and put on some lotion. =)
Zsuzsy Bee,
I do not know how I let this hub miss me. I am infatuated with hands. Loved this one. Thanks for such a good cover.C.S.
I have a friend who suffers from this. She's an artist and it affects her work. I'll ask her if she knows about the oil.
Thank you, kind Bee.
This is a beautiful hub. So well written and thought-out... the images are great. Wow! I read it twice.
I wonder if olive oil would work as well as the other oils you were using. I know it is good for your and good for your hair in a hair treatment.
A patiently and caringly written hub.
Regards
Vaidy
I've always been so very impressed of what good, hard working hands can do in our lives.
Great hub and very handy as always Patty!!
wondeful hub, and very helpful for my hands. :)
donnaleemason! I now remember my mother using Juergens hand lotion on my hands and face and how much it BURNED me as a child. It actually left red marks on me.
Do you think since Vaseline comes form petroleum, it's a bit like putting motor oil on oneself? LOL
Beautiful hub! It reminded me of the hands of my grandmother, how beautiful they were to hold. I have a picture where I can still see them.
Wonderful recipe for arthritis, too!
Great hub Zsuzsy. One day, a friend told me that her 90 yr old mother used vaseline at night and rubbed it all over and at 90 she had the face of a 40 yr old. Well, being 40 and seeing that my hands were in need of a little attention, I rubbed vaseline into them before I went to sleep. Didn't think much about it until the next night when I was typing on the computer and looked down to find that the skin was flaking off my hands. There I was 40yrs old with the hands of a 90yr old, took me three weeks to lose 3 layers of skin. Guess I was allergic to it. Well it made me laugh to think of how vain I was. LOL.
Donna
Well, we really have to hand it to you - A great Hub and discussion!
Patty :)
Excellent hub! What can we do without hands.
Wonderful! I will send to my mom who has arthritis. Love the baby hand photos. Just want to snuggle them.
Handy hub Zsuzsy Bee. I really like those hand images. That cream is a good recipe but I use an easy no heat method and it gets rid of the pain.
1 part finely ground cayenne powder and 2 parts petroleum jelly.
I mix it and if it is too crumbly then I add more petroleum jelly. The only draw back of my recipe is that is does stain clothes!
Happy hubbing! :)
Great hub Zuzsy! I will definitely try your massage oil, as the over the counter preparations are of little help. Thanks for lending a hand!
So when we say we know something like the back of our hands - we probably don't know it at all!!
Zsuzsy, I'm sending this Hub to a friend with arthritis in her hands. It's sure to help. It's also a deligthful read.
I am so thankful not to have arthritis and have done some stretching classes for arthritis sufferers. I'll print this Hub out and make copies to pass out to folks!
Great information and style!
Patty
Absolutely wonderful Asuzsy--almost poetic, especially the part about baby hands. I'm also impressed that you make your own massage oil and are willing to share the recipe. Great hub. I loved it. Thanks
Great hub, Zsuzsy! I´m thinking if that massage oil could help with my wrists/fingers pain!? I´m still going to physiotherapy everyday and they always hurt in the evening. Right now my major problem are the right hand finger joints which are still much inflexible :(
No.. I'm just very busy and don't have much time to leave the comments I'd like to leave, or read the hubs I'd like to read. But this one made me glad I took a moment to do it!
Excellent!
Wow, what an original hub! Great stuff, Zuz!
